2011 polls: Jega warns politicians

AS 2011 general election draws near, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega has warned political gladiators to be mindful of actions capable of sabotaging the efforts of his commission to bequeath to the nation credible elections.

Professor Jega gave the warning on Thursday, when he paid a working visit to the Commandant-General of National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Dr Ade Abolurin, at the corps headquarters, in Abuja.

He said that his commission was poised to deliver free, fair and credible elections next year in accordance with the expectations reposed on him by the masses of this country, adding that anything short of that would amount to a breach of trust. He said that in doing that, he would create a level playing ground for all politicians irrespective of their political associations and ethnic background, adding, however, that any politician found to work at crossroads with constitutional provisions regarding elections would be made to face the law.

He lamented that politicians had done things with outright disregard to the law of the land in the past, and appealed to security agencies in the country to work in close consort with his commission to secure men and materials and even the entire voting environment during the coming elections.
