I’m Not Afraid to Die, Says Tinubu

FormerLagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has said he was not afraid of death and stressed that threats to his life or a phantom frame up that is politically motivated was one of the greatest disservice to enthroning democratic stability in Nigeria.

Tinubu told reporters yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on arrival from Abuja he would lead a battery of opposition political parties, non governmental organisations as well as civil society groups to resist electoral violence, stating that the sanctity of human life should be supreme to any society.

The chieftain of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) said that he would not lose a minute of sleep over the alleged plans by the Peoples Democratic (PDP)-led government to hound him into prison or at the least kill him, insisting that they cannot manufacture any crime to frame him up if none exists.

He also said that he would not allow the threat to his life lie low, noting that PDP government would fail in their bid to distort the much needed stability that the polity desires.

Why should I be disturbed? I have constitutional and fundamental right for freedom, for the pursuit of my happiness, I am not in any way frightened by the threat in the course of my political struggle to chart a new course for the political stability of Nigeria. We are struggling to re-make Nigeria, if we are to truly remain a united country, the politics of the last 12 years, is not the politics you can describe as a patriotic zeal to rebuild the nation, and put the nation first, above selfish interest,” he said.

Tinubu observed that In Africa, the opposition party is seen as a threat to be persecuted and such is not new to him.

It happened to me during the Abacha regime, it happened to me several times. You cannot manufacture crime where none exists, or was committed, therefore, the question of arrest or persecution, it is not a threat to me at all; I will not loose one minute sleep on the issue.

The former Governor of Lagos state said that the Federal Government is not the court, saying: “I believe in the judiciary system, this is constitutional democracy, the moment you start persecuting political opponents, you are going to lose your integrity, completely, to the threat to life, that is left to God Almighty. No matter what any human being plans, God gives Life, only Him can take it too.

Tinubu noted that government controls the entire security apparatus and institutions, noting that it could deploy security, but warned that government should be careful at the state of Nigeria’s political journey.

They are doing this because they are frightened, nothing more, no leadership, has ever achieved any attempt to create change without courage, and the path to that freedom, will be very, very critical, it will be slippery , it may be dangerous, it depends on how you navigate, and you must be determined , you must have the courage , you must persevere, you must have the quality and character to do what is right, you do not need to be afraid, what have they gotten to show for the last twelve years that PDP has been in office, what have they got to show as dividends of democracy, since this democratic dispensation started over ten years ago?

He remarked that the poor among Nigerians are getting poorer; there is an army of unemployment, the educational system is disintegrating, the power situation phoney as the PDP itself.

Look there is no functional infrastructure in the country anymore that is what they should concentrate on, not persecuting opposition party members. We will have to continue to do what they have to do, the more the demagogues are trying to destroy the party, called PDP.

He added: They are doing this because they are frightened, nothing more, no leadership, has ever achieved any attempt to create change without courage, and the path to that freedom will be very, very critical; it will be slippery, it may be dangerous, it depends on how you navigate, and you must be determined, you must have the courage you must persevere, you must have the quality and character to do what is right, you do not need to be afraid, what have they gotten to show for the last twelve years that PDP has been in office, what have they got to show as dividends of democracy.
