Ondo: Police arrest Ondo monarch over unrest

Security operatives from the Federal Criminal Investigation Department in Abuja have detained the Saki of Arigidi-Akoko in Ondo State, Oba Yisa Olanipekun.

The FCID operatives arrested the monarch in company with officers of the Oke-Agbe division of the Nigerian Police on Friday.

The development marked the high point of the crises rocking Arigidi-Akoko in the Akoko North West Local Government area of the state.

Our correspondent gathered in Akure on Saturday that the monarch was arrested in Oke-Agbo in view of a petition written by some indigenes of the town to the Inspector-General of Police on the protracted crises in the town.

He was said to have since been taken away to Abuja by officers of the FCID.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that his arrest may not be unconnected with the incessant attacks on some of his subjects believed to be opposed to the monarch.

He said the petitioner had alleged that Olanipekun and a prominent son of the town (name withheld) on January 1, invaded the Ekitiji quarters, where those who are allegedly opposed to his emergence live.

The incident, which allegedly happened around 9am while the people were preparing for church service, left three people wounded.

The petitioners claimed that efforts at getting justice in the state were unsuccessful as the police failed to arrest the perpetrators.

The Friday attack was said to be the fourth on the quarters with the first that happened in August 2009 allegedly claiming the life of one Igbekele Oyeleye.

It was also learnt that a similar incident happened in the town in August 2010 when youths from Ayase quarters clashed with a group from Ekitiji leading to the destruction of houses and cars with three people wounded.

However, people from Ekitiji claimed that they had, on several occasions, petitioned the state government but got no positive response.

The state government was said to have intervened last August by inviting the aggrieved parties to a meeting with the Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, Mr. Diran Iyantan.

Following the meeting, fresh violence reportedly broke out twice with properties worth millions of naira destroyed.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ondo State Command, Mr. Adeniran Aremu, said he could, however, not confirm reason for the arrest of the monarch as at the time of filing this report.
