Corps members protest against INEC
Headlines Sunday, January 16th, 2011THE National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members assigned to register voters in some parts of Ibadan protested the non-availability of adequate provision of security and transport arrangements after the exercise on Saturday.
Nigerian Tribune, on Saturday, saw some of these corps members while returning to the Ibadan North Local Government Area to deliver the items used for the registration exercise, while some of them were being brought on commercial motorcycles.
Some of the corps members who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune stated that “we may not continue the exercise except the government is able to make adequate arrangement for our transportation to and from the venue of the registration because going on motorcycles may expose us to danger of being attacked by some desperate politicians.”
As at the time the Nigerian Tribune was speaking with them there was no light in the headquarters of the Local government council for them to charge the battery which they would use to power the laptops they would use for registration the following day, therefore they said it would not be possible for them to go out for the registration exercise.
Nigerian Tribune also gathered that they were not being given any allowance as take-off grants to sustain them, which according to some of them may lead them into accepting food from some of the politicians who have been hospitable to them for obvious reason, they stated.
It was also gathered that the so-call mattress given to them to sleep with at night were mere carpet underlay and not real mattress, this some of them described as exploitation because they knew the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have given them the allowance they ought to give us, but we are yet to see anything they said.
