Ribadu, Buhari Meet
Latest Politics, Muhammadu Buhari (1983-85), Presidency Saturday, January 22nd, 2011As consultations by politicians of the progressive bent continue across the country ahead of the April general election, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN)’s presidential candidate in the poll, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with his Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) counterpart, Maj-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.)
The meeting, which took place at Buhari’s Jabi Close residence in Kaduna, Kaduna State, was aimed at thrashing out observed grey areas in the policy directions of both parties.
A source at the meeting told THISDAY on condition of anonymity that the ACN and CPC had in the last two months intensified discussions aimed at presenting a common programme before the electorate at the elections.
The source also said given the tempo of discussions that had taken place between leaders of both parties, their dream of fielding a common presidential candidate in the forthcoming election may be attained but how this will be done is yet unclear.
Apart from the smoothening up of rough edges in the policy direction of the parties, it was also gathered that Ribadu’s visit to Buhari’s home was deliberately undertaken to afford him the opportunity to formally intimate the CPC flag bearer of his (Ribadu’s) emergence as the candidate of the ACN for the April elections.
“Ribadu also visited Buhari in Kaduna to inform him that he’s the candidate of the ACN and also to solicit his (Buhari’s) support,” the source said.
It was not clear, however, at press time whether Ribadu requested his host to step down for him, given the line of discussions between the parties in that regard.
