400 PDP members defect to ACN in Badagry

NO fewer than 400 members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Badagry, Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State have defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria.

A former PDP chieftain in the council, Mr. Kamarudeen Ajape, who led the defectors, said the internal unity in the ACN attracted many of them.

Ajape said, “All of us that declared for ACN today do so because we are already tired of internal crises that bedevil the PDP in the state. It is a shame that in the last couple of years the PDP could not put its house in order and produce a credible candidate that can defeat the ACN’s candidate. Can you imagine a chieftain of the party who is currently serving a jail term still dictating what happens in the PDP from prison?

“This means that the party lacks credible people who can take a decision independent of the bad old stock.”

Ajape, a former PDP House of Assembly candidate, added that the leadership style of Governor Babatunde Fashola further prompted them to join the ACN.

He said, “We have seen that beyond fear of contradiction, the incumbent administration has done very well. We have also seen that he can do better if given more opportunity.

“For somebody like me who joined politics for the development of my people, my intention to join the ACN is to swell the victory of the party in the state in the coming poll. I say this because ACN in Badagry used to be jittery at the approach of any election. But that is over now.”

He added that going by the performance of the elected office-holders in the ACN, “it is obvious that the party will play a major role at the centre even if the party does not win the presidency.”

The Deputy State Chairman of ACN, Alhaji Sunmola Sarifisiyu, in his remark thanked them for joining the winning party in the state.

He said, “It is a good thing for those who defected from the PDP and the ACN because they have seen the light. Their former party has not performed at the centre and that has sent a wrong signal to the members that there is a need to join the progressive party.”
