Plan to Re-launch NADECO Begins

Prominent left wing politicians who fought   military rule to a standstill during the pro-democracy struggle on the platform of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) will launch a fresh come back next week, THISDAY has learnt.

Forces behind NADECO, according to sources, are planning to use the opportunity of the burial rites of the late Chief Anthony Enahoro which begins next Tuesday in Lagos to announce the re-emergence of the platform in their renewed search to express displeasure over the situation of events in Nigeria and aggressively fight for change.

Among those facilitating the return of NADECO are former Minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, former Nigerian Ambassador to the Soviet Republic, Commodore Dan Suleiman (rtd.), former military governor of Lagos State, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Alani Akinrinade and former Afenifere scribe, Mr. Ayo Opadokun.

Others are founder of Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Dr. Friedrick Fasehun, former presidential candidate, Chief Olu Falae, an Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, among others across the country who are still being consulted.

It is not yet clear who will head the new NADECO group, but THISDAY learnt that the group met on Tuesday in the house of Kanu who was the Chairman of the All Purposes Committee of the defunct  NADECO, where they all agreed to return to the trenches by re-floating the platform.

A member of the group who would not want to be quoted, told THISDAY yesterday that the rebirth of NADECO has become compelling, saying the advent of democracy which the group fought vehemently for has failed woefully to fulfil its expectation, adding that the unpleasant situation in the country today makes things “ripe” for the second coming of NADECO.

He also said members of the defunct NADECO had been inundated with calls and delegations from various people tasking them to re-awake from their slumber and commence the process of vigorously campaigns for change in the country.

He disclosed that the group would work hand in hand with civil society organizations and relevant political platforms to bring about the desired change.
