Guber Candidate in Borno, 6 Others Killed
Borno, General Politics, Raw Politics, State News Saturday, January 29th, 2011Barely two weeks after the ANPP primary elections in Borno State, the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Alhaji Fanami Gubio, and 6 others were yesterday shot dead by unknown gunmen.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who is on an official engagement in Addis Ababa, condemned the killing and vowed that government will do everything possible to bring the perpetrators of the dastardly act to book.
Confirming the incident to newsmen in Maiduguri, the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Jinjiri Abubakar, said people were shot dead and others injured, but that the police are on top of the situation and advised the public not to panic.
An eyewitness told LEADERSHIP WEEKEND that the gunmen came on a motorcycle, and might have trailed Gubio from far, as, immediately he alighted from his car in front of his family house at Lawan Bukar ward of the state capital, they opened fire, killing him and six others instantly around 3:30 in the afternoon.
The witness further disclosed that after the killings, the gunmen fired sporadically into the air to scare people away and later escaped unchallenged as people ran for their dear lives.
Another eye witness said he was killed after greeting his father and that the gunmen came on motocycles. Apart from Gubio, governor Sheriff’s younger brother, Alhaji Goni Sheriff, two security operatives and three other ANPP stalwarts were also killed in cold blood.
The Borno state Governor, who drove into the Government House amidst tight security and stayed for only two minutes before driving out, was visibly devastated by the incident and could not even speak to the press.
