South South, South East, North Central Govs Endorse Jonathan

Governors from three geo-political zones rose yesterday from a meeting, chaired by their Kwara State counterpart and leader of the Governors’ Forum, Bukola Saraki, with a firm resolve to ensure the stability of the country and support the presidential aspiration of President Goodluck Jonathan in the April, 2011 elections.

The meeting, which is a continuation of the first meeting held in Asaba, the Delta State capital at the instance of the Governor, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, deliberated on critical national issues bordering on fostering the nation’s nascent democracy, security, law and order, economic development, as well as the need to rally all sections of the country to buy into Jonathan’s presidential bid in April.

Among those who attended yesterday’s meeting in Ilorin, were Governors Bukola  Saraki of Kwara, Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta, Theodore Orji of Abia, Timipreye Silva of Bayelsa, Liyel Imoke of Cross River, Babaginda Aliyu of Niger, Suswan of Benue, Chime of Enugu, Elechi of Ebonyi, Deputy Governor of Nassarawa State, who represented his Governor, and peter Obi of Anambra State.

Addressing reporters at the end of the meeting, Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State said the meeting was aimed at stabilising the polity. Besides, he said the Governors would continue to play their role, especially in the area of ensuring security of lives and property.

He said the meeting would move to other geo-political zones, as the governors would continue to spread the message of unity across the country.

“We decided to consult round the country with our colleagues on how to stabilise the polity.  We have commenced with the North Central and will soon move to North West, North East and South West, all in a bid to stabilise the polity and ensure that the unity of this country is paramount in whatever we are doing.

Reacting to spate of assassinations in the country, Obi said:  “The Governors have been playing a fair role in ensuring that there is progress in Nigeria. We started with our Chairman (Saraki), who happens to be from the North Central. We will ensure that everything issue in Nigeria is resolved through our consultations.”
