Bauchi: 20 killed, 20 suspects arrested, 4,000 displaced

THE Bauchi State Police Command has disclosed that as of Sunday, 20 people have been confirmed killed in last Thursday’s crisis while 20 people have so far been arrested with dangerous weapons including guns believed to have been used during the crisis. Also, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Bauchi State Chapter has declared that it has recorded a total of 4,000 displaced persons as a result of the crisis.

The state Police Commissioner, Mohammed Abdulkadir indabawa, in a telephone interview, disclosed that searches had led to the discovery of more dead bodies, as according to him, some of the bodies could not be recognised because they were completely burnt, adding that it was when people started looking for their relations that the bodies were discovered after serious searches.

He added that the number of suspects rose to 20 from the initial 18 following the arrest of two more suspects following investigations by the police, assuring that as soon as investigations were concluded all those arrested would be arraigned in court in line with the laws of the land saying that no person would kept without trials.

The police boss also said that, “as I am talking to you, peace has returned to the area as people can now go about with their legitimate social and commercial activities; we have our men on the ground to ensure that peace reigns. A stakeholders’ meeting was held last weekend at the Government House, presided over by the governor and for more than 12 hours we discussed the way out for lasting peace they told the governor all they need and he has assured them the government will do its best to promote peace there.”
