Nigerians in Egypt Cry For Help

Following the threatening unrest that has disturbed the peace of Egypt in the last couple of days, Nigerians in that country have cried out for an urgent assistance from the federal government to evacuate them from danger. Information reaching LEADERSHIP indicated that Nigerians who wanted to head back home due to the uprising were trapped at Cairo airport, as most of the flights were scheduled to fly only to European countries, but none to African countries.

According to a text message received by our correspondent, the predicament of the Nigerians is severe as they sent a “Save Our Soul” (SOS) to the Nigerian authorities, appealing to the Presidency and the Ministry of Foreign affairs to expedite action to save them from imminent danger.

“Please help us tell the Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Presidency that hundreds of Nigerians are trapped at Cairo Airport. Most came here for medical reasons. Since yesterday Egypt Air has sent many flights to Europe, but not one to African countries. We face real humiliation here, please help,” the message read.

Efforts to obtain more information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the situation proved abortive as the Press Corps Director of the ministry, Ozo Nwobu, but could not connect with the Nigerian Embassy in Egypt.

The 80 million Arab nation has been ravaged by days of turbulence that started on last Tuesday, which saw demonstrators defy curfew and police brutality to demand the end of the 30-year regime of President Hosni Mubarak.
