Fashola donates 100 vehicles to police

AS campaign by various political candidates begun towards the April general polls, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, yesterday, said he would ensure crime, violence free electioneering campaign period in Lagos through a holistic approach.

The governor stated this while handing over 100 security operational vehicles and 50 patrol motorcycles equipped with various security gadgets to the management of Lagos state Security Trust Fund, LSSTF at Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

The vehicles and motorcycles of 150 in number donated by the state government and added up to the existing fleet of 184 vehicles, makes it 330 vehicles already donated to the state security outfit, Rapid Response Squad, RRS.

Fashola said it was part of his administration’s efforts to assist the police in the sustained efforts of combating crimes as well as for efficient and effective policing in the state.

He said: “I am happy that in Lagos State our democracy has been a meaningful and fruitful experience. An experience, that citizen can hold the government accountable where the people can expect that the government will protect their lives and property.

“An experience where Lagosians are now looking forward to the commencement of electioneering campaign, a campaign that will be a carnival of ideas and superiority of programmes executed within the commencement of the present dispensation.

“That is the kind of campaign we will have in Lagos State and that is the kind of campaign that the police and other security agencies in the state will provide rather than a campaign of guns and machetes.”

While saying that Lagos State has started experiencing night economy once again, the governor commended the Police and other security agencies in the state for their “total commitment” to the security of life and property in the state adding that the price for security is eternal vigilance from all and sundry.
Backbone of security

Fashola also commended the Board of Trustees of the State Security Trust Fund saying the Fund was not only the backbone of security in the State but had become a model which was being emulated not only nationally but also internationally.

However, to make judicious use of the new equipment, Fashola urged the police to see security items in their possession as instrument for protecting law abiding citizens and a source of fear for criminals and not to brutalize law abiding citizens whose taxes are being used to purchase the security items.

Pointing out that everyone is a stakeholder in the issue of security, Fashola urged Lagos residents to be vigilant at all times.
