EFCC Recovers $11b
EFCC Politics, Latest Politics Tuesday, February 1st, 2011The Federal government has pledged a renewed commitment to the fight against corruption in the country, just as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said it had recovered a total sum of $11 billion in seven years, from fraudulent persons, groups and organizations in and outside the country.
The Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. Namadi Sambo made this declaration yesterday, in response to Mrs Farida’s disclosure of the $11 billion recovered so far, at the occasion of the foundation laying ceremony of the new EFCC headquarters building in Abuja.
Arc. Sambo, while commending the EFCC’S laudable project estimated to cost N18,867,283,615.14 (18.87 billion),noted that the event had provided opportunity to reiterate the present administration’s zero tolerance stance to corruption, as well as its renewed commitment to the fight by supporting anti-corruption agencies to stem the tide of corruption and extravagant living in the country. Accordingly, he also pointed out that good governance still remains a major product of diligent and robust anti-corruption war, which the government of President Goodluck Jonathan represents.
The VP however, maintained that democracy and development which Nigerians desire would inevitably be at great risk, if corruption continues unabated in our public life, hence federal government’s resolve to consolidate on all facilities needed to vigorously fight the canker worm of corruption ravaging the economy and make Nigeria take its pride of place in the comity of nations, especially its leadership role in the continent of Africa.
However, the contractor handling the project, Julius Berger plc, represented by its MD, Wolfgang Goetsch, promised to deliver it in good time within the stipulated period as contained in the contract agreement.
