(Lawlessness) Police beat landlord for ejecting brother

A 49-year-old landlord, Mr Sunday Afuwape, got a shock of his life on Wednesday as he was battered by two policemen for ejecting their brother, a tenant, Ahmed, from his house, at Ikorodu, Lagos State.

According to Afuwape, the tenant, Ahmed, was issued a quit notice because he always came home late in the night and had refused to change this habit of night crawling.

He said: “Ahmed is a commercial motorcyclist who always comes home between 12.00 p.m. and 1.00 a.m. We have warned him several times to desist but he refused.”

However, when Ahmed finally agreed to pack out of the house, he arranged for policemen to deal with the landlord.

Afuwape said that the policemen, identified as Inspector Ojo and OC. Bakai hid under a shed where they apprehended him and beat him to a state of unconsciousness.

Afuwape, who himself is an Assistant Senior Man ‘O’ War in the state, said that the policemen questioned him on why he had ejected their brother. “They collected my walky-talky, wrist watch and hit my head with a big stick.”

He told the Nigerian Tribune that he was later locked up in a cell at the Divisional Police Headquarters, Sagamu Road, Ikorodu, for a day and was later released without committing any offence.

Afuwape, who had since written letter to the Office of the Public Defender, Lagos State Ministry of Justice, said he would not allow the police and their brother, Ahmed, to go unpunished.

“While in the cell, they molested me and forced me to write a statement but I refused. My refusal to write the statement compounded my punishment in the cell,” Afuwape lamented.
