1.8M voters register in Jigwawa – INEC
Jigawa, State News Sunday, February 6th, 2011The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered 1,828,455 eligible voters in Jigawa State.
The state INEC’s Administrative Secretary, Alhaji Bala Shittu, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Dutse, said that the figure represented the number of registered voters as at Friday.
Shittu explained that the INEC officials were still on the field to collate figures of the last day of the exercise.
He pointed out that in spite of the initial technical and logistic challenges, the registration had been successful in the state.
“So far, we did not receive complaints from any local government that there are people who could not register even in the densely populated areas, before the deadline.
“I am very sure that we captured virtually all the eligible voters in the state,” he added.
He said that this year’s figure was more than that of 2006 where 1,724,372 eligible voters were registered in the state.
Shittu also commended the efforts of security agencies in ensuring a hitch-free voter registration exercise in the state.
He assured that all the ad-hoc staff that participated in the exercise would receive their entitlements this week, stating that some allowances had already been paid.
