Siasia wins first match
Headlines, Soccer, Sports Wednesday, February 9th, 2011Samson Siasia began his job as Super Eagles coach on a bright note on Wednesday when he led the senior national team to a 2-1 win over Leone Stars of Sierra Leone in a friendly match played at a packed Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Marseille left-back Taye Taiwo converted an early penalty after Denmark-based striker Peter Utaka was brought down in the 18-yard box before Nigeria Premier League leading scorer Ehiosun Ekigho doubled the score line in first half stoppage time.
However, West Brom forward Osaze Odemwingie had his goal- a header off a cross from the impressive Ahmed Musa- disallowed for off side.
But the visitors reduced the score in the 89th minute when Mohammed Bangura latched onto a pass from the centre of the pitch, found his way past two Nigerian defenders before hitting a pile driver past keeper Dele Ayenugba.
The encounter afforded Siasia the opportunity to hand out first caps to Karabukspor of Turkey striker, Emmanuel Emenike, Inter Milan winger, Joel Obi and Ekigho.
