INEC Registers 63.9 Million Nigerians …Verification Next Week
Elections 2011, General Politics, INEC Politics Friday, February 11th, 2011The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega said yesterday in Abuja that the commission had so far registered 63, 981,460 Nigerians for the April general elections.
“With most of the data now reported by the states, we have by this morning registered 63,981,460 Nigerians for the coming elections,’’ he said.
Jega made this known at the Civil Society Pre Election Conference with the theme, “Nigeria’s 2011 Elections: Challenges and Opportunities’’, organised by the National Democratic Institute (NDI).
He said that INEC would hold verification from February 14 to February18, and urged Nigerians to turn out for the exercise as they did for the voters registration.
Prof Jega called on the public to use the opportunity to register their claims and objectives as the list of registered persons would be displayed in all the polling units across the country.
“This is therefore an opportunity for people to deal with irregular entries in the register,’’ he said.
“Perhaps you know an under-age registrant or somebody who procured double registration or any other fraudulent practice, this is an opportunity to tell the commission and we promise to deal with such cases expeditiously according to the law.’’
He added that the exercise which did not take place in the past “partly explains the problem of the now old register’’.
According to him, many people had been apprehended during the voters registration, some taken to court and are under prosecution while some are still being investigated.
He promised that INEC would detect underage registration during the clean up period and have such names delisted from the data base.
