Yobe: Jonathan Campaign Office Torched

Yobe State office of Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign was on Monday attacked and torched by some political thugs believed to be loyal to a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

The thugs numbering about 20 armed with cutlasses and knives were said to have come with containers of fuel to the campaign office situated in the suburb of Damaturu at about 7.30 p.m.

According to an eyewitness, the guard was scared off even as the thugs injured two other persons found on the premises before they smashed the windows and set part of the building ablaze.

The entire building could have been razed if not for the joint efforts of the men of the state fire service and police who extinguished the fire and chased away the thugs.

Speaking to journalists on the incident, Yobe State Coordinator of Goodluck/ Sambo Campaign Organisation, Senator Umar Maina said going by the report of some of the eyewitnesses the arsonists are members their party, the PDP.

Maina who said the incident will not affect the visit of the president to the state on campaign, disclosed that the police were handling the case well and that the president is very popular in the state.

He also said he was surprised that the campaign office could be razed as there was no known problem within the party in the state that could have triggered off such an attack.

Confirming the incident to newsmen, Yobe State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Adamu Ali said the case was reported and investigation was ongoing.
