3 Policemen killed in shoot-out with 12-man robbery gang
Headlines Thursday, February 24th, 2011There was blood bath yesterday along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway, following a fierce shoot-out between a 12-man robbery gang and a Police patrol team, resulting in the death of three policemen.
A Police Constable said to have also been shot by the dare-devil robbers, escaped death by the whiskers, as he was said to be responding to treatment.
But the Lagos State Police Command, said only one of its men lost his life in the shoot out.
Eyewitnesses account said the robbers barricaded the highway from Ojodu Berger end, at about 3am, prompting Luxury buses and other night travelers to stop, apparently thinking they were policemen on routine check.
But just as they were set to begin the operation, they were said to have sighted a Police patrol van from Isheri division approaching.
Thinking the policemen had got wind of their presence, the robbers reportedly opened fire on the unsuspecting cops, who managed to brace up to the challenge by firing back.
Eyewitnesses said the robbers made away with the dead cops riffles, leaving the passengers, some of who ran into the bush for safety.
Police sources at the Lagos State Police Command, however, said only one policeman died while another was injured. Sources also said about five of the robbers sustained bullet wounds and managed to escape.
Spokesman for the Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, called on medical doctors as well as traditional doctors to avail the Police with information of suspects with bullet wounds who could be receiving treatment from them.
Security according to him, had been beefed up to ensure security in the area.
