April polls: We ‘re not using manual register- INEC
Elections 2011 Monday, February 28th, 2011The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has dispelled speculations that it was discarding the recent electronically compiled voters register.
INEC in a statement by Mr. Kayode Idowu, Chief Press Secretary to the National Chairman, said the clarification became necessary following reports that the commission was going to discard the recent register compiled through electronic means for a manual register.
The statement read in part: “This is to correct widespread misconception that the commission was discarding the voter register, given that it will not be using Direct Data Capture, DDC, machines for accreditation in the April elections.
“For purposes of the elections, INEC will use the register to be certified as required by law, following data aggregation and de-duplication processes, as well as corrections necessitated by the recently-concluded display for claims and objections. This certified register will be printed out for use during the April elections, just like the provisional list of registrants was printed out and displayed recently for purposes of claims and objections.
“For avoidance of doubt, the new voter register to be used is the one compiled electronically using the DDCMs.”
“INEC is making this clarification in the hope that it will assuage agitation in the public over alleged recourse by the Commission to a ‘manual register’ to the exclusion of the ‘electronic register’.
