I am Messiah Nigeria needs –Okotie
Headlines, National Politics Saturday, March 19th, 2011Presidential candidate of Fresh Party, Reverend Chris Okotie, has said President Goodluck Jonathan lacks the necessary capacity to lead Nigeria, even as he claimed to be the messiah Nigeria needs to get to the Promise Land.
In an exclusive chat with Sunday Sun, Okotie, who is the Pastor of the Household of God Church, claimed to be better than the incumbent president and other candidates in the April polls because of what he described as his intellectual capacity and ‘divine’ motivation.
‘‘I am not motivated by altruistic sentiment. What makes me better than President Goodluck Jonathan is my intellectual capacity to grab the complexity of Nigeria in the concept of global village. Another reason is compassion that a leader should have.. “The connectivity that is resident in me, I do not see it in PDP leadership. They have been very callous and insensitive. What galvanizes a country to greater height is not found in President Goodluck Jonathan. His entire political career shows that he has been politically timid.
“I say that with all due respect. When he was Deputy Governor, there was no protestation when his principal plundered the state. When he was Vice President, even during the soap opera that followed President Yar’Adua’s incapacitation, he didn’t say anything.
“He didn’t stand and speak for Nigeria when we needed somebody to create the political equilibrium that was needed. He has been a recipient of serendipity, luck. And that is the legacy he wants to give to our children. He didn’t do anything, people appointed him. He didn’t run electioneering campaign.
“Nigerians should understand that the legacy is not tenable. It is very obvious that the President cannot operate the office of the President. Nigeria will be worse for it if he becomes President again. I have nothing against him. I respect him as a co-contestant, as a kinsman, but I don’t see him leading us to the Promised Land. Politically speaking, I do not think he qualifies for that office,” he said.
Okotie, who said he had been to major states in the North to campaign, said he was not into the carnival-like campaign that PDP is used to. “The most important thing is that we are talking to the people we need to talk to. The money that is supposed to be used for infrastructure is what President Jonathan is using for campaign. We are serious with our goal.
“I will not attend any debate that will not include President Goodluck Jonathan. It trivialises the whole exercise. Those of us who are in the same race with him should boycott any debate he is not attending. The resident is supposed to be the Renaissance man. The more we attend, the more we create double standard,” he said.
Okotie claimed to be the paradigm shift Nigeria needs now, adding that, “Nigerians know my history. I am the messiah Nigeria needs.” Taking a swipe at the academic credential of the president, Okotie said “Zoology is far from politics”.
His words, “I understand he studied Zoology. Being a lecturer in Zoology does not guarantee your intellectual competence. Listen to him, observe him and determine the level of intellectual competence he manifests. Zoology is very far away from politics.”
