Withdrawal of Mopol: Banks in Delta close down in protest against IGP order

Bank customers in Delta State went through harrowing experiences, on Wednesday, as financial institutions put their offices under lock and key in protest against withdrawal of mobile policemen attached to them.

The mobile policemen were withdrawn in response to the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Hafiz Ringim, and the need for their services in the conduct of Saturday’s National Assembly election.

The directive was executed on Wednesday, leading to the suspension of operations by commercial banks, claiming insecurity as an excuse.

Bank customers who thronged the various bank branches in the twin cities of Effurun, Warri and environs were taken aback and shocked to find the gates locked.

The customers became angry when it was discovered that some of the workers of the banks were secretly attending to those considered as their major clients through the back door.

“How can they treat us like this? If they are going to embark on strike or whatever they call it, at least, they should inform us to prepare and make enough withdrawal that will last us,” a customer, who gave his name simply as Ochuko, lamented.

A senior bank official, who said he was not authorised to talk, said they took the action in the best interest of the customers, adding that, “we are doing this to protest the insecurity we are exposed to.”
