Uduaghan shuts maternity home, says it’s a deadly place

Delta State governor, Dr. Emmanuel Udaughan, has ordered the immediate  closure of a maternity home at Cable Point,  Asaba.

Uduaghan, who gave the order when he paid a surprise visit to the maternity, said the place was operating beyond its mandate.

He described the Maternity as a deadly centre capable of sending patients to their early graves even as he frowned at the filthy nature of the environment where the maternity is located.

Describing what the maternity was practising as criminal, the governor said it was an abuse of the medical profession especially when a maternity admits male patients and prescribes drugs for them.

His words: “What this maternity is doing is criminal. This place is deadly and it is going beyond its mandate. A maternity is expected to admit only pregnant women and deliver babies.”

Emphasizing that many deaths might have been recorded in the maternity, Uduaghan said, “Only God knows how many patients may have died here. At this modern time this filthy place is being used as a maternity and hospital. I am disappointed.”

The governor, a medical practitioner, appealed to Deltans not to patronize quacks who usurp the functions of medical doctors.

He said his administration was running a free ante natal health care programme and enjoined pregnant women to embrace it.
