Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola, has stated his administration’s readiness to defend any citizen who served the state conscientiously as long as he did so within the law.
Fashola said it was wrong for people to assault officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), noting that people who had issues with the agency should lodge official complaints with the appropriate authority.
He however bemoaned the attitude of some officials of the agency who draw the reputation of the Lagos State government into the mud saying: “Our responsibility is to fish out those who are not civil in LASTMA, but as citizens you don’t have any right to assault any LASTMA officials.
The governor lamented that some Nigerians were in the habit of criticising the government, rather than accepting responsibility for bringing the economy into disrepute, adding that each time people embark on an industrial action, productivity is put on hold.
According to Fashola: “We complain that our economy is not working. Have we asked ourselves how many times we destroy the economy ourselves? Each time people go on strike, you stop production cycle. Our responsibility is to manage the economy in such a way that it does not become a burden to us.”
He appealed to Nigerians to bring an end to criticism and return to productivity so that the economy could be better for us.
Chief Executive Officer of LASTMA, Mr. Young Arabamen, called on Nigerians to report any official of the agency caught accepting bribe or anyone impersonating, to the authority saying, “We don’t condole bribery, if there is any complain after thorough investigation, the person will be dismissed. We have also put mechanism in place to identify genuine officials.”
