Sack education ministers, Gani’s son tells Jonathan
Headlines, National Politics, Raw Politics, Women Politics Monday, October 3rd, 2011The son of the late legal icon and human rights activist, Mohammed Fawehinmi, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack, without further delay, the two ministers in charge of education in the country, saying both lack quality to move the sector forward.
Mohammed, who spoke after the thanksgiving service to celebrate the 60th anniversary of St. Saviour’s School, Ebute Metta, his alma mater, said the ministers were not fit to continue in office following their inability to tackle the rot in the system, which had resulted in mass failure of students in WAEC/NECO exams, current strike of university staff unions and other ills.
“Based on their performance in office I pass vote of no confidence on Minister of Education, Professor Ruquayyatu Rufa’i and Minister of State for Education, Mr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike. Mr. President should replace them with qualified hands that can move the sector forward. If you have them in office, the education sector may collapse. What have been their achievements since both were appointed?” he asked.
According to him, in the alternative of being sacked as ministers and from the Federal Executive Council, Prof. Rufa’i and Mr. Wike should resign their appointment or Mr. President should reshuffle his cabinet and drop the two ministers for non performance.
He specifically noted that since her appointment under the late President Umaru Yar’ Adua and re-appointment by President Jonathan, unions in the education sector have gone on numerous strikes with her finding no solution to the problem, insisting there were many qualified women from the North that could deliver results.
In the alternative, he recommended the Senate Committee Chairman on Education, Senator Uche Chukwumereije and former House of Representatives chairman on diaspora, Mrs. Abike-Dabire Erewa, noting that both lawmakers did well in their given assignments thus they could turn things around in the education sector.
Another reason Mohammed gave for demanding the sack of the two ministers his revelation that currently in some North states, some primary school pupils still study under the tree with billions sunk into primary education by the government and also stressed that Nigerian lecturers and teachers are among the poorly paid in the World.
On the incessant bomb blast by Boko Haram, the son of the late legal luminary fingered a retired military ruler as being the sponsor of the sect activities and wondered why Mr. President and security personnel failed to take action to stop him and others from the violence attacks in some states.
Mohammed revealed that because Jonathan wrestled the Presidency from him and a former Vice President who believed the North must produced the number one citizen but when they failed, they resulted to sponsoring the sect.
On the visit of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to the son of the late Boko Haram leader, he said the reason was to protect his business interest from being attacked by the sect describing it as mission for self interest.
“Obasanjo went to Borno state to beg the son of the sect leader because, he doesn’t want them to bomb his Ota farm, Presidential library in Ogun state, Bells University and Bells Secondary school Ota”, he noted.
