Disturbing Picture: Conductor pulled from vehicle by LASTMA officials crushed to death

 Crushed

There was pandemonium at the Toll Gate end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Thursday after officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority allegedly caused the death of a 30-year-old bus conductor.

It was learnt that the LASTMA officials allegedly pushed the conductor, Rasidi Alabi, from a moving vehicle. The conductor reportedly fell on the road and was crushed to death by a trailer before he could get up.

The incident caused a violent protest as sympathisers blocked the busy expressway, leading to a gridlock that lasted for hours.

It was learnt that Alabi, who worked with a 14-seater Volkswagen commercial bus, with registration number XZ 78 AGK, shortly before his death, called passengers into the bus at Motorway Bus Stop.

An eyewitness, Mutiu Alfred, said the usual practice was that when a bus had loaded passengers, the conductor would give N100 to LASTMA officials deployed in the area.

He said, “Alabi and his driver decided not to give the officials the money and wanted to zoom off. Two LASTMA officials ran after their bus and managed to pull the conductor down before the bus accelerated. The force of pulling Alabi from the bus made him fall down and hit his head on the road.

“Meanwhile, a truck, which was coming had seen them and tried to avoid him. But the conductor fell in its path. The truck ran over him and crushed him to death before zooming off. It was learnt that one of the LASTMA officials, who had a name tag ‘Oshodi O.’ on his uniform, was seized by a mob that had gathered. They pounced on him, but a police patrol team rescued him.”

It was learnt that the mob resisted the policemen and pelted them with stones for over 20 minutes.

Another eyewitness, Florence Okafor, said, “A LASTMA official who thought the conductor was still alive, tried to carry him away but he was stabbed repeatedly by some youths.”

Another bus conductor, Samson, was seen weeping profusely at the scene.

He told one of our correspondents that Alabi was his intimate friend, adding that his (Alabi’s) wife had just been delivered of a baby few days ago.

He said, “His wife just gave birth to twins. How will I break this news to her? What is N100 that he refused to give to these LASTMA officials? Now he is dead and his wife will have to go back to Ilorin, Kwara State, and suffer in the village.”

Another eyewitness, who declined to give his name, said the naming ceremony of Alabi’s baby was slated for Friday (today).

“I think LASTMA officials need to be more friendly and gentle in their approach. Many people have been killed in a similar fashion by these men. I think it’s high time the Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, looked into the matter,” the eyewitness said.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, said sanity had been restored in the area.

He, however, claimed that, “A Faragon bus was driving against traffic and was being chased by LASTMA officials when the bus conductor fell and was crushed. This infuriated the people and they attacked LASTMA officials. Policemen arrived at the scene immediately and normalcy was restored in the area.”

When asked if any arrest had been made, Jaiyeoba said he could not immediately confirm it.

  1. The LASTMA official should be prosecuted for manslaughter. As a country we must stem this tide of indescriminate shedding of blood of innicent poeple. A woman has been widowed, two children have been made fatherless from birth. Imagine what strruggles they will have to go through. Imagine what these kids would turn out to be without a father. CRY!
