Biu faces Senate panel

Commissioner of Police

The suspended Commissioner of Police, Zakari Biu, who is facing disciplinary action over the escape of a high profile Boko Haram suspect, on Tuesday appeared before the Senate Committee on Police Affairs.

Biu was taken before the committee where he was asked some questions by the senators about the circumstances surrounding the escape of the suspect, Kabir Sokoto.

Sources said he was taken before the committee by a complement of riot policemen and security operatives in mufti.

Details of his appearance before the committee was sketchy but there were indications that the Force Disciplinary Committee, set up by the Force Headquarters to determine the culpability or otherwise of Biu, began sitting on Tuesday.

The FDC, comprising six senior Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, would take written and oral defence from Biu and are expected to make recommendations which would be sent to the Police Service Commission.

A Commissioner in the PSC, Comfort Obi, confirmed to THE PUNCH on Tuesday that the commission’s Chairman, Parry Osayande, had written to the Force Headquarters asking it to constitute the FDC with senior AIGS in the absence of DIGs.

She said the FDC was expected to submit its recommendations to the PSC within two weeks, adding that the report would be deliberated on by the PSC and a decision taken on Biu.

Obi said, “Biu is already stating his case before the FDC, but it (FDC) doesn’t have the final say on the case; it will submit its report to the PSC. It is not the military or the State Security Service that will decide the case.
