Over 200 members of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) yesterday took over major roads and streets of the commercial city of Onitsha in a roadshow as part of the burial rites for Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
MASSOB members, who marched through the Old Market Road down to the main market in a peaceful road- show, hoisted their flags and other Biafran logistics, chanting songs of praises to the fallen hero.
The roadshow, which, according to the regional administrator of Onitsha Region 4, Chief Arinze Igbani, was to herald the beginning of burial for the late Biafran warlord, Dim Ojukwu whom he described as the leader of Igbo race.
According to Chief Igbani, the road show was to alert the residents and traders of Onitsha on the preparation for the funeral of Ojukwu, adding that it was also aimed at getting the traders prepared for Ikemba’s final journey.
Chief Igbani also eulogized the former Biafran warlord and said MASSOB had perfected plans to take active part in the funeral.
According to Igbani, “what we are doing is part of traditional ways of burial in Igboland. The Icho madu said as it is called, is done for every Igbo man, so, Ojukwu was not just Igbo man, he was Igbo leader and oracle, so MASSOB is performing icho madu rites as part of funeral in Igbo land”
He said that his members will comport themselves throughout the burial and reiterated the readiness of MASSOB to ensure adquate security for all those that will attend the burial.
“MASSOB will work with security agencies to ensure security of everyone that will be coming for the burial but within Nigeria and abroad, so that is the essence of what we are doing today to show the outside world the hospitality of Ndigbo,” he said.
