Odunayo Oniyide, a 41-year-old employee of Joined Pomat Ltd., was on February 29, 2012, killed by gunmen in Ayobo, Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the deceased was on his way home when he was accosted by the men.

A friend of the deceased, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that the incident occurred in the deceased’s neighbourhood

He said, “Odunayo was on his way home from work around 8:30pm and had stopped on Bada Balogun Street to buy food for his two-month-old baby, Solomon, when hoodlums numbering about four, accosted him and entered into his car.

“One of the hoodlums took control of the steering wheel while others entered into another car and followed closely behind.”

He said although he was not at the scene of the crime, some residents who witnessed what happened immediately raised the alarm and drew the attention of some vigilantes in the area.

Our source said, “Some members of the Oodua Peoples Congress immediately chased after the vehicle and even broke the rear glass of the Sports Utility Vehicle which the hoodlums had come with.

“But their efforts proved abortive as the hoodlums began shooting in the air to scare people.”

It was learnt that the wife of the deceased, Olusola, became worried when her husband was not at home, a long time after he had called to inform her he was on his way.

The next day Odunayo’s corpse was found in a ditch in a nearby town.

Our source said, “Odunayo’s corpse was discovered at Itele area of Ogun State, about 12km from where he had been abducted the previous night. His face was swollen and he had bruises all over his body.

“He had a gunshot wound on his leg and he seemed to have been strangled. Also, his Identity card was gripped tightly in his hand.”

Our correspondent learnt that the vehicle of the deceased, a Toyota Avensis, was later located – via a tracking device – in Benin Republic.

It was gathered that policemen attached to the Ipaja Division, Lagos, as well as Itele Division, Ogun, were both working to arrest the culprits.

Meanwhile, the deceased was on Friday buried at his residence at Ayobo after a funeral service at St. Andrews Anglican Church, Ipaja.

The Officiating Minister, Venerable Dele Okunnuga, urged all to live right before God and prayed against untimely death for the children of the deceased.

“Forty-one is not an old age and Odunayo’s untimely death is not a thing of joy as he was killed during his prime. My prayer is that God consoles his family and protect them from danger and untimely death,” he said.

The children of the deceased, Titobiloluwa, Temilade, Solomon, his wife, Olusola, friends and relatives attended the funeral.

The elder sister of the deceased, however, rained curses on his killers.

She said amid tears, “My brother was an innocent soul who was brutally murdered by men of the underworld. He was snatched from a loving wife and three little children including a two-month-old who will never grow to know his father.

“May it never be well with those who killed Odunayo, may his killers never know peace, may they die in the same manner in which they killed Odunayo, and may sorrow forever be their lot.”

The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Joseph Jaiyeoba, could not immediately confirm the incident to our correspondent but his Ogun State counterpart, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said Odunayo was killed in Lagos but his corpse was found in Ogun State.

He said, “The deceased was robbed at Oko-Oba area of Lagos State. His corpse was recovered at Ogun State. But according to investigations, he was shot elsewhere because there were no traces of blood at the scene where his corpse was recovered in Ogun State.

“His vehicle has still not been recovered. The investigation will be a collaborative one between both Ogun and Lagos Police because although the robbery took place within the Lagos jurisdiction, his corpse was found within the Ogun jurisdiction.”-Punch
