Jonathan: No Going Back on One Man One Vote

President Goodluck Jonathan Wednesday said he was committed to electoral reforms which would ensure an enduring democracy in the country.

Similarly, Vice-President Namadi Sambo, commended the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members from the North-west for their peaceful conduct right from the ward congresses to the zonal level, saying this was a manifestation of the fact that everything was done in a just, fair and transparent manner.

But Jonathan, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Mike Oghiadome, gave the assurance at the congress of the South-south zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Port Harcourt.
“I once more assure Nigerians that in every election, every vote will count. I am delighted that the process has already started in the PDP and I believe it will continue to improve in coming elections,” he said.

He commended delegates to the congress for the peaceful and harmonious atmosphere in which the elections were conducted, adding: “This is an indication that the South-south zone is one cohesive body.”

In his goodwill message, Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, congratulated the new officers and wished them well in their new assignment.

The past Acting Chairman of the zone, Chief Joe Echonwela, in his welcome address, said his leadership had ensured that somebody from the area was elected president.

“We know if we join hands together we should reclaim Edo State back to PDP come July 14, 2012,” he said.

At the end of the congress, Dr. Stephen Oru from Delta State emerged national vice-chairman of the zone, while Mr. Joe Edionuwele from Edo State was returned as secretary.

Other officers include: Treasurer,  Mrs. Theresa Ezema (Cross River); Financial Secretary, Grace Sam-Jaja (Rivers); Organising Secretary, Chief Festus Ochonogor; Legal Adviser, Mr. Val Areyinka; Publicity Secretary, Imoowo Okpokpo; and Youth Leader, Traneyi Izuagie. All the officers were returned unopposed.

Meanwhile, Sambo while commending the delegates restated Federal Government’s determination to address the problem of insecurity which he noted was posing a serious threat to the socio- economic development of the country.

Also, the Speaker of the House of Representative, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, described the North-west Zone as the melting-pot of Nigerian politics considering the imminent Nigerians that were produced by the zone.

The North West zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Wednesday retained, through a consensus, its Zonal Chairman, Ambassador Ibrahim Musa Kazaure, during its convention which held at the Indoor Sports Hall at the Murtala Square, Kaduna.
