Super Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa has vowed that Nigeria will be fired up by the disrespectful comments ascribed to Malawi coach, Kinnah Phiri, ahead of weekend’s World Cup 2014 qualifying match in Blantyre.
The Flames coach, Phiri appeared to have raised the stakes ahead of Nigeria’s visit for the Group F match by deriding the Eagles as team that is living in past glory and is no longer a force in Africa.
But before the Eagles flew to Malawi Thursday night, Musa admitted that the players felt hurt by the Malawi’s coach’s comment and have resolved to prove Phiri wrong by rising to the occasion in Blantyre.
“Well, the Malawi coach can say whatever he likes, but we don’t take kindly to his reference to us as a spent force. This is a Malawi team that has never beaten Nigeria in a competitive match. I don’t see how they are going to end their winless run against us as we are determined to prove we are the better side by surprising them in their backyard on Saturday,” Musa said.
Musa insisted that despite the recent setback of Nigeria, including the failure of the Eagles to reach the last Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon, Nigeria is still one of the top teams on the continent with an enviable pedigree which Malawi can only dream of attaining.
“Our situation is not as bad as it is made to look. We have a crop of good and highly motivated players who are determined to deliver the result that will delight the public. We are on course to reach the World Cup final in Brazil and I don’t see Malawi as an obstacle. I promise to score against the Flames if I am featured in the match,” Musa said.
