A Federal High Court in Abuja will on July 24 decide whether to release the international passport of Senator Mohammed Aliyu Ndume who is standing trial for alleged terrorism financing to him to enable travel abroad.

Ndume had yesterday resumed efforts to retrieve his international passport from the custody of the court as his lawyers pleaded with the court for its release.

His passport was deposited with the court as one of the conditions for his bail.

In an application moved by his lawyers led by Mr Segun Jolaowo, the senator urged the court to release his travel documents to enable him perform Islamic religious rites in Saudi Arabia and seek further medical attention overseas.

According to Ndume’s lawyers, the application seeking the release of the travel documents will enable his client seek further medical attention abroad after performing religious rites in Saudi Arabia.

Jolawo said “We all know the state of our nation’s medical facilities, that is why he wants to travel abroad for medical attention as well perform his religious obligation in Saudi Arabia.”

He further informed the court that the senator had always appeared for his trial and had never flouted any of the conditions attached to his bail and that he would promptly return his International Passport upon his return to the court.
The court was also reminded that despite an earlier leave granted by the court for Ndume to travel which the SSS frustrated, he promptly returned the passport to the custody of the court.

In opposing the application, the prosecutor, Mr Sunday Mordi, urged the court to dismiss the application in the interest of justice and the security of the entire nation.

He said that releasing Ndume’s passport would jeopardise the  trial.

He said: “We all know that this country is under siege by the dreaded Boko Haram. We hear tales of bomb blasts in Damaturu, Yobe and Jos”

Mordi further faulted the claims by the  senator on the issue of medical attention abroad, noting that there are medical facilities across the nation to cater for whatever ailment he might be suffering from.

Senator Ndume, in his application, did not specify the ailment for which he wanted to seek medical help abroad.

The trial judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole subsequently adjourned ruling on the application to Tuesday, July 24.
