Picture: Greek Olympic star banned from the London games for racist tweet against AfricansAfrica, Headlines, Sports, Track & Field Thursday, July 26th, 2012
It was meant to be a joke, but the joke became a costly one for Voula Papachristou, a Greek track star who has been banned from participating in the London Olympic over a tweet she posted on account, @papaxristoutj.
- Her tweet which was written in Greek was translated as “With so many Africans in Greece… at least the
West Nile mosquitoes will be eating home-made food!!!” The Greek Olympic Committee did not take the
joke lightly as they immediately remove Papachristou from the country’s Olympic roaster. On her own part, Papachristou deleted the comment quickly and offer a lengthy apology posted on her account. She said: “I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.
“My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in
discrimination between human beings and races.“I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the
National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family.”
It was an apology that could not save her London Olympic dreams, perhaps she’ll be well-behaved in 2016 games. Voula Papachristou is a triple jumper.
