Boko Haram denies kidnap of 7 French nationals

Abu Muhammad Ibn Abdulazeez, commander of the Boko Haram sect in charge of southern and northern Borno who has been speaking for the sect in recent times appeared again yesterday at a press conference with journalists in Maiduguri and absolved the Islamic militant sect of involvement in the kidnap of seven French nationals in the Cameroon border.

“We have been hearing of late how people are linking us with the kidnap of the seven French nationals in Cameroon. We have nothing to do with the French people or their abductors. “The security or whoever that is trying to rescue the kidnapped French nationals should better look elsewhere, because it would amount to waste of time if they continue assuming we are involved,” said Abdulaziz, who was accompanied by four other men believed to be members of the sect.

Abdulaziz, suspected to be one of the leaders of the splinter group of Boko Haram had four weeks ago declared ceasefire even as there have been renewed killings and attacks after the ceasefire declared by the sect. With a claim that he was speaking for the sect leader, Imam Abubakar Shekau, Abdulaziz also denied that the sect was responsible for renewed hostility within and around Maiduguri in which at least 30 persons including security personnel and three Korean medical expatriates have been killed.

He said their leader Imam Shekau was still committed to the ceasefire deal declared recently. He also absolved the sect from complicity in the recently circulated leaflets in some parts of Maiduguri in which it was claimed Shekau has not discussed any truce deal with government. He also declined to comment on the rumoured illhealth of their leader, Shekau, saying “I am not in the position to talk about it.”
