Polio: FG seeks $125m W’Bank loan (To embezzle?)

Leke Baiyewu, Abuja

The Federal Government plans to obtain a loan of $125m from the World Bank for procurement of vaccines to tackle epidemics and communicable diseases.

The government also said it had released the N9.8bn budgeted for same purpose in the 2016 budget to the Federal Ministry of Health.

The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, who appeared before the Senate Committee on Primary Health Care and Communicable Diseases on Thursday, said the loan facility became necessary as a result of the high cost of vaccines against polio virus and other communicable diseases.

He said $60m out of the $125m loan would be used for vaccination against polio alone in six rounds, while the remaining $65m would be used for preventive vaccination against outbreak of other communicable diseases.

The minister said, “Since the polio vaccine is quite expensive, Nigeria plans on obtaining a $125m loan facility from World Bank; $60m will go to polio while the remaining $65m would be used for procurement of vaccines against possible outbreak of any other communicable diseases. You should expect that the borrowing plan will come through you (the committee).”

Speaking on the recent case of Lassa fever in Delta State, the minister told the committee that his ministry was on top of the situation.

He urged Nigerians not to panic over possible outbreak of the Zika virus, saying, “Zika has been with us for a long time since 1954 without any serious incident.”
