Five Ondo civil servants arrested over N200m fraud

Peter Dada, Akure

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested five workers of the Ondo State Government for defrauding their employer of a sum of N200m through the issuance of fake receipts.
The suspects are, Oluwatoyin Abiodun, Ojo Ayodeji, David Omoyajowo, Isaac Solomon and Femi Tuki and one Ayadi Orimisan, who allegedly assisted the five suspects to perpetuate the fraud.

It was gathered that all the suspects had already been suspended by the state government before they were handed over to the police.

Parading the suspects at the headquarters of the command, at Alagbaka, Akure, the state capital on Tuesday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the suspects were allegedly fond of issuing fake tax clearance, certificate of roadworthiness, and fake driver’s licence to the innocent members of the public.
The PPRO said, “They would be charged to court as soon as we conclude our investigations.”

One of the suspects, Oluwatoyin Abiodun, however, denied the allegation but she confirmed that they had earlier been suspended by the Ondo State Civil Service Commission over the allegation.

Commenting on the development, the Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Dr. Doyin Odebowale, explained that the interim investigation had shown that the state government had been defrauded to the tune of N200m and that was why they were handed over to the police for prosecution.
Similarly, in his reaction, the Head of Service in the state, Mr. Toyin Akinkuotu, who also confirmed the incident said the current administration in the state had zero tolerance for corrupt practices in the civil service.
