Opinion: Orji Kalu’s judgment delivers blow to air of impunity

By Boniface Chizea

Uzor Kalu travail is object lesson to all concerned. Afterall the wheel of justice might be slow but without undue interference and with persons of courage and integrity at the helm, justice will eventually be served as in this case. The wise person learns from the experience of others. Certainly this matter is not over until all the steps available for a possible reprieve are exhausted. I would be very much surprised if this case does not go up to Supreme Court. But I have also heard about the competence and thoroughness of the trial judge which has been extolled to high heavens.

Therefore the consensus is that it might be difficult to upturn this judgement. Let me make it clear that this rejoinder is not personal. The corruption and extent of moral rot in the country stinks to high heavens. This judgement must have delivered a severe body blow to the air of impunity walking on all fours in the land. My take is that corruption has accounted in no small measure for the decadence and lack of development in Nigeria today. Otherwise Nigeria with the extent of God bestowed endowment has no business languishing at the bottom rug of the ladder of development. And the strategy for the termination of this reign of decadence and squalor is not farfetched.

We need a leader who is convinced and determined to end the rot. How many politically exposed compatriots can today account for the wealth they possess and parade? Is there anyone out there who is brave enough to ask? This will precipitate the revolution some have clamoured for. We have witnessed scene one of this unfolding saga. It will be very interesting to see how this pans out.
