Nigerian, Prof. Charles Egbu, appointed first black VC of a UK university

(NNP) A Nigerian academic from Abatete, Idemili North LGA of Anambra State, Professor Charles Egbu, has become the Vice Chancellor of a UK university, Leeds Trinity University. With his appointment, Professor Egbu has made history as  the first black person to lead a major UK university.

Professor Egbu’s appointment as the Chief Executive of the university was predicated on his wide experience in academia. Before his appointment, he was the Pro-Chancellor at the University of East London, Dean of the School of Built Environment and Architecture at London South Bank University. He had also worked at the University of Salford, University College London, Leeds Beckett University, among others.

In his congratulatory message, President Buhari urged the new VC to consolidate on the gains made by previous VCs and wished him well, saying he is a role model for the younger generation. The new VC is a quality surveyor and has twelve books to his credit with well over 350 publications.

The university founded in 1966, has a student population of almost 10,000 spread over three urban campuses in Leeds, Horsforth and West Yorkshire. Professor Egbu will assume office in November.
