Senate bill passes to establish Nigerian Army University

(NNP) The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill into law that would establish the Nigerian Army University in Biu, Borno State. According to the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Ali Ndume, the bill considered what he termed as “areas that are in conflict with other extant laws, those that have security implication and those that are ambiguous.”

The Chairman further stated that “The university with the passage of the bill into law would promote research and other means of advancement of knowledge and its application to military hardware and software, social, cultural, economical, scientific, and technological situation.” He noted that the university would be the catalyst for the development of technology and manpower.

In the meantime, critics have blasted the location of the university in the north as another indication that the federal government is not sensitive to the fact that all the key military establishments in the country are located in the north. They noted that the Nigerian Defense Academy (NDA) is located in Kaduna as are other key military bases such as the NAF base. The idea that the location was predated on areas that are in conflict as stated by the chairman is paddling a false narrative.

They noted that the university could have been located in the southeast or south-south none of which have any notable military establishment. Critics further noted that the choice of the location undermines the notion of one Nigeria and will further sow the seed of discord among the different stakeholders in the country. They urged the federal government to reverse course and relocate the university to the south in the true sense of one Nigeria.
