Canadian Elections: Justin Trudeau hangs onto power, fails to achieve majority in parliament
Africa & World Politics, Canadian Politics, NNP News Tuesday, September 21st, 2021(NNP- Toronto) The Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau holds onto power in an early election designed to achieve a majority in parliament. The Liberal Party leader gamble to achieve majority in parliament did not materialize as his party fell short of the 170-seat mark. With this failed bid for majority, Trudeau would now lead a minority government that must align with other parties to have its policies and programs passed by parliament.
Opposition parties have accused the 49-year-old son of former prime minister Elliott Trudeau of mis-managing the economy, especially during the pandemic and calling an early election that cost taxpayers more than half a billion dollars. Trudeau might also face tougher scrutiny within his own party for calling an early election that may have reduced the party’s seat count in parliament and where the party lost the popular vote. But in his post-election speech, Trudeau towed a different line and claimed that Canadians have given his party a “clear mandate,” a claim many dismiss as sheer politics.
