INEC fixes Delta rerun for Jan 6
Delta, Latest Politics Thursday, December 23rd, 2010The re-run election ordered by the Court of Appeal Benin for Delta State has been fixed for the 6th of January, 2011, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, announced yesterday in Abuja.National Commissioner in charge of Publicity, Prince Solomon Soyebi, who disclosed this in Abuja said the date was in line with the 90-day period ordered by the Court in Benin.
According to him, “we have decided to conduct the election on January 6. As you are aware, the chairman, Professor Jega, has always emphasized the commission’s commitment to the tenets and letters of our laws”.
He also revealed that the train-the-trainers’ programme for voters registration which was earlier scheduled to begin on December 27 had been shifted by two days to December 29.
It was gathered that the decision on the Delta re-run was taken on Tuesday after the comission’s chairman Professor Jega, and the National Commissioners met late into the night.
A source at the commission explained that the commission ‘is determination to get the Delta state rerun election out of the way before the second week of January when the nationwide voter registration exercise is scheduled to commence’.
It would be recalled that on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010, the Court of Appeal sitting in Benin, Edo state nullified the election of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan as governor of Delta state following an appeal by Chief Great Ogboru of the Democratic Peoples Party.
