There was pandemonium on New Year day as a carnival in Lagos ended in violence, leaving many people injured and 12 vehicles allegedly damaged. The event, which began on new Near Year’s eve but was disrupted few hours into the New Year, was organised by youths living within Alayabiagba area of Ajegunle . It was allegedly hijacked by hoodlums from different areas. Residents scampered for safety while some even abandoned their vehicles on the road and fled whenthe violence erupted. Residents were said to have alerted the Divisional Police Officer of Ajegunle Police Station , Mr. Silva Chinedu, a Chief Superintendent of Police, who led policemen to the scene and effected the arrest of many persons in connection with the incident.

Many passersby were said to have been injured while the screens of vehicles were smashed. Daily Sun gathered that the organisers tried to calm the situation to no avail. Meanwhile, Lagos State Police Command has killed two alleged armed robbers, arrested four, recovered car and ammunition, among others in two separate operations on New Year eve. The hoodlums, numbering about six, were said to be operating at about 2am, on Victor Ogundipe Street, Ishashi area of the metropolis, when the Area ‘E’ FESTAC Commander, Mr. Gbenga Adeyanju, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, was alerted by a resident in the area. Adeyanju allegedly called the police officers attached to Ishashi Police Division and they swiftly moved to the scene. It was gathered that immediately the robbers sighted the crime fighters, they opened fire on them.

The police returned fire, killingr two of the bandits. Two others were said to have escaped while the police nabbed two suspects. The targeted victim (names with held) claimed that he had a narrow escape. According to him when the bandits broke into his home, they pointed guns at his wife and children and threatened to kill them. They collected jewelry, mobile phones, cash and other valuables from them before the police arrived. The victim claimed that the robbers used a Toyota Camry car which was also recovered by the police to block the entrance of his gate. The suspects claimed that they too were victims attacked and abducted in their Camry car by the same robbers. According to the suspects, they wanted to pick their relation at the airport, who was returning from abroad enroute the South-east. They (suspects) also alleged that even their wallets were among the valuables recovered from the bodies. They claimed that the car they were driving also belonged to their relation. But the victim complained that as he escaped from his residence to alert the police, he did not see anybody in that vehicle. He also noted that if the suspects were actually traveling to the east at about 2am as they alleged, they should have filled the tank of the vehicle, which was almost empty.

Meanwhile when the police called one of the numbers in the mobile phones of the dead robbers to ascertain if they were the owner, someone responded and told the police that the robbers dispossessed him of his cash, mobile phones and jackets. And the emblem of a new generation bank was attached to the jacket won by one of the deceased. In another development, police officers attached to FESTAC Police Station, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr. Usman Ndanbabo, had arrested two men who claimed to be members of Man-o-War over alleged armed robbery. Though the suspects denied going to rob anybody, their alleged victims, Mr. and Mrs. ThankGod, claimed that they knew Cyril and his alleged gang member, Ugochukwu, and that was the reason they were able to recognise them. ThankGod claimed that Ugochukwu covered his face with pieces of clothes.
