Bakassi: Ita-Giwa lauds Senate’s resolution

By ZIKA BOBBY

Former Special Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanyo and the late President Musa Yar’adua, Senator Florence Ita- Giwa has hailed the recent resolution of the Senate to the President, urging him to ensure the reclamation of the part of Bakassi ceded to the Cameroun via the ICJ verdict but appealed that the resettlement of her people in the INEC identified unceded areas like the Kwa Island and Dayspring one and two should be considered first, to ameliorate the people’s suffering.

In a statement made available to newsmen, Ita-Giwa submitted that the current requests and remarks on Bakassi were what she and her people have been clamouring for since the verdict but ignored by those in power. The statement reads in part: “Recent resolution of the Senate to the President to appeal or seek to review the International Court of Justice verdict ceding Bakassi to Cameroon is welcome by us the long suffering indigenes of Bakassi. Let it never be said that we stood idly by while well meaning groups of Nigerians cried out against the unfortunate ceding of our homeland.

“All the arguments being raised now and positions being taken now have been raised and taken by us in the past and were all roundly ignored by the powers that be at the time, that they being re echoed now while welcomed is in our opinion belated and possesses little chance of success. We are however not ruling out the possibility of a miracle.” “However, we will not like the remote chance of a miracle to stand in the way of the urgent task of relocating and properly resettling our displaced people.

We have been left to wander all over Cross River State like second-class gypsy citizens since the signing of the green tree agreement in 2006. Our stand is simple by all means go ahead with your plans to appeal or review the unfortunate judgment, we are even prepared to participate in the giving evidence and information that will be needed which was not the case in the initial trial, but for heaven’s sake go ahead with the relocation and re settlement of our people at the kwa island and dayspring one and two islands at the same time. This for us is paramount.”
