Nigeria champions, Dolphins will play their 2012 CAF Champions’ League matches at the Port Harcourt Liberation Stadium.
The venue for the club’s home games in this year’s edition of Africa’s elite club competition had been shrouded in mystery following reports that the brand new ultra modern Adokiye Amiesimaka Sports Complex was at the forefront of proposed venues for the games.
Following a visit by a delegation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) a forth night ago, it has now become clear that the Liberation Stadium will be used as the venue for the champions’ league venues of Dolphins FC.
Acting General Manager of the club, Dumbor Awanem said Wednesday that he was pleased the inspectors eventually gave the facility the all-clear to host matches in the competition.
“We are pleased but not surprised because this is one of the best stadiums in the country. We are happy that the people of Rivers State and the south-south region of the country will have an opportunity to watch classic matches involving the best football sides on the continent,” Awanem told SuperSport.com.
The club chief also took the time to voice his sentiments on the club’s upcoming first leg, first round game against Sony Ela Nguema in Malabo this weekend.
“We don’t know much about them but we are prepared. We know that Equatorial Guinea is not a small football country anymore following their national team’s displays at the just concluded 2012 Africa Cup of nations, teams from that country deserve respect,” Awanem explained.
CD Nguema has made four previous appearances in the CAF champions’ league but has never gone beyond the first round of the competition.
