Deal that gave Obasanjo victory in Ogun – Investigation
General Politics, Olusegun Obasanjo (1976-79, 99-07), Presidency Tuesday, February 1st, 2011
More facts emerged in Abuja on Tuesday on how the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party and President Goodluck Jonathan worked hand-in-hand to ensure that former President Olusegun Obasanjo triumphed in the political battled in Ogun State.
Our correspondent gathered that while Jonathan needed the support of the Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel to win the presidential primaries of the party, he also did not want to rubbish Obasanjo, who had been his benefactor since his days as Vice-president to the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
In order to carry the two men along, Jonathan was said to have begged Obasanjo to wait for him to emerge as the party’s presidential candidate before a final decision would be taken on the Ogun impasse.
It was learnt that when the pressure mounted on Jonathan by Daniel and Obasanjo became unbearable, the president said that he would abide by the decision of the party on its candidates in Ogun State.
But unknown to many, the President was said to have told the parties involved and the leadership of the party, which the former president chairs as its Board of Trustee, that he would also abide by whatever the courts say on the matter.
“This was why the Obsanjo faction went to court and obtained an injunction against the Daniel group,” a top official of the party said.
The president had informed the leadership of the party that since its government respects rule of law, the party should not act to the contrary in handling the Ogun matter.
Although the party went to INEC with the list submitted by the Daniel group, it was said to have made a U-turn when the commission said it was in possession of a valid court order, which had ruled otherwise.
