Marriage to Titi was hell –Akolade Arowolo
Headlines Sunday, July 10th, 2011Akolade claimed he never intended to marry Titilayo ,but was compelled to marry her when she became pregnant while they were dating. He said he had another woman he could’ve married , but that didn’t happen.
Though he claimed to love her,
Akolade also said life with Titilayo was hellish. They quarreled a lot and the last quarrel resulted in Titilayo’s death. There’s no doubt about that . He denies killing her even though they both inflicted knife wounds on each other. Apart from mediation from both families during such quarreling, there was no other party that could have interfered with their wedlock.
Akolade claimed that he jumped out of the window in their building even with severe wounds on both hands and his stomach. He claimed he didn’t know Titilayo had locked the door before their violent quarrel. Who could have killed Titilayo, if Akolade denies killing her? Sunday Sun learnt that the matter is still being investigated by Lagos State Crime Investigation Department and Titilayo’s family lawyer said the deceased couldn’t have killed herself. Read below Akolade’s account of the tragedy in this interview he granted Wole Balogun.Excerpts:
Following the alleged killing of late Mrs Titilayo Omozoje Arowolo by her husband, Akolade Arowolo, Non Governmental Organizations involved in rights advocacy and rights of women have risen to the occasion. They have called for Due Process in the prosecution of the suspect which they believe would serve as a deterrent to others.
They’ve resolved to stage a protest against abuse of women and in Lagos.
Akolade Arowolo continues to deny he killed his wife. In a rather dramatic twist to the story, the suspect who recently turned 30 said his wife murdered herself. Already, the deceased’s family lawyer faulted her husband’s claims that Mrs Arowolo killed herself.
Arowolo further alleged that his wife’s death was “…evidence of spiritual wickedness in high places ” adding “If I can fully explain what happened that day I will be lying. That day my wife was not the Titi I knew. She was possessed by a demon and she became unusually strong and wild . She stabbed me on my left hand and then in the stomach, and all over my chest and when I tried to wrestle the knife from her, She slashed my right palm. As I was trying to get help, my wife stabbed herself several times. Unfortunately, she is dead and cannot talk about the incident.”
Recalling how he met Titi, he said “Titi and I were just friends back in the university. I’m a born again Christian and I have a calling to be a pastor, I am a staunch member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Christ Parish, Gbagada but my marriage has been hellish.”
Arowolo added that he never intended to marry Titi. His words: “I was dating another lady and we were planning to get married, but my wife then was just a friend and she claimed to love me. One thing led to the other and I ended up having premarital sex with her. Subsequently, she was pregnant and she couldn’t abort the pregnancy . Her family insisted that I must marry her, so that was how I ended up marrying her. It was because she was pregnant.”
Arowolo further claimed that on the day Titilayo was murdered “…it was my birthday and she was on leave. She told me that we should celebrate it elaborately but I said we should have a low key celebration. Just the two of us; but my wife quarreled with me, saying that she was tired of our wedlock and that one of her aunties called Olabisi advised her to divorce me. I begged her not to leave me that day but she insisted she must leave that day. I even called a neighbor, an elderly woman, to persuade her not to divorce me and after a lot of entreaties she went into the bedroom and as I was entering the room to see her, she attacked me with a knife and stabbed me on my left hand. I screamed and asked her what she meant by stabbing me. She told me since I didn’t want her to leave, she will kill me and kill herself.
I pushed her onto the bed in an attempt to wrestle the knife from her and she came back on me stronger like one possessed by a demon…,” “Unknown to me, my wife had locked all the doors , and I had to jump from the building to get help, I was the one who reported the incident to the police at Ejigbo, I didn’t run away as alleged.
“I loved my wife. The truth is we quarreled a lot and the marriage was hellish. I could have divorced her but the Bible says God forbids divorce and this kept stopping me and I also thought of my daughter. If I had known, I could have divorced her a long time and maybe I would not be in this mess today.
My advice to young men is that they should hold on to God , they should not allow any lady or family force or lure them into marriage , because they impregnated a woman. They should seek divorce if they have irreconcilable differences in their marriages and then ask God for forgiveness. It’s better that way than ending in this mess I am in. I have learnt my lessons the hard way and I know God will vindicate me, because I did not kill my wife”, he said
