Nations Cup: In Picture: E’Guinea claim historic win over Libya

Co-hosts Equatorial Guinea scored a dramatic late winner to shock Libya 1-0 in the opening match of the 2012 African Cup of Nations played at the 35,000-seat Estadio de Bata on Saturday.
The victory makes the Equatorial Guinea squad $1m richer as they were promised the sum by the country’s government for the victory. In addition, any goal scored by the Central Africans attracts $20, 000.
Javier-Angel Balboa scored after racing onto a through ball and slotting past Libya goalkeeper Samir Aboud into the top corner in the 87th minute. It was Equatorial Guinea’s- who are playing in their first AFCON tournament- first ever goal in the competition.
The co-hosts threatened an upset throughout the game, with Juvenal Edjogo-Owono’s deflected shot rebounding off a post in the first half. Ivan Bolado put the rebound into the net, but the effort was disallowed for offside.
Despite injured captain Rodolfo Bodipo managing only a 15-minute substitute role, Equatorial Guinea belied its billing as the tournament’s lowest-ranked team by matching Libya and creating opportunities.
