NFF may take Rwanda tie outside Abuja

The possibility of the magnificent Abuja National Stadium hosting any match or event now depends on the prompt intervention of the Federal Government to provide fund to procure the needed multi millions Naira electricity cable supplying power to the stadium vandalised by cable thieves in November last year.
The Director General National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Dr Patrick Ekeji, had during an event held recently at the Media Centre in the stadium, apologised to those in attendants over the suffocating uncomfortable atmosphere in the venue, attributing the total blackout to the handiwork of vandals, who tampered with the cable supplying power to the stadium.

Although the DG had promised that arrangements were in top gear to restore power at the stadium within a short period, Daily Sunsports investigations can reveal that the hope for a quick fix fades yesterday when the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) went on an assessment tour of the vandalised cable.

Confirming the situation to Daily Sunsports on telephone, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Abuja Electricity District Company, Engineer Abdulganiyu Umar, lamented the magnitude of the vandalization, expressing fears that it would cost the power company millions of Naira to restore light to the stadium.
Engr. Umar disclosed that though he had sent his members of his staff to take an assessment of the vandalised cables, he would need the support of the Sports Ministry to raise the fund, lamenting that sourcing the cable would pose another serious challenge to the power company.

In his words: “We have told everybody to be alert because this vandalism is posing many challenges to us. Even when we were facing difficulty servicing our customers, people still allow vandals to remove cables under their nose. However, we are trying to find a way to restore the vandalised cable.
“However, I must confess to you that the cable is very expensive couple with the fact that the cable vandalised was long and would require huge amount of money to buy. I have sent people this morning (Monday) to assess the situation and ascertain the length of the cable required. We have also got letter from the DG of Sports ministry in connection to the issue.
