Rangers pip 3SC, reclaim top spot
Headlines, Soccer, Sports Sunday, April 1st, 2012Rangers have reclaimed top spot in the Nigeria Premier League after a 3-2 home win over 3SC in Enugu.
They now have 32 points from 18 matches to move back to the summit of the NPL after Enyimba were held to a 1-1 draw by Akwa United at home and Kano Pillars fell 1-0 at champions Dolphin.
Enyimba dropped to second place with 31 points, while Pillars stayed put in third position on 29 points. In midweek, Rangers slipped to third place after they lost 1-0 at Sharks in Port Harcourt, but they fought back Sunday to beat age-long rivals Shooting Stars in front of their fans.
Furious Shooting Stars top official Mutiu Adepoju slammed the officiating of the game, saying some referees are not fit to handle the whistle.
Home team Rangers went in front after 29 minutes through leading scorer Chikeluba Ofoedu for his seventh goal of the season.
With Rangers controlling the midfield through Emeka Eze, ‘The Flying Antelopes’ doubled their advantage on 37 minutes courtesy of winger Razak Adegbite.
It was Adegbite’s third goal of the campaign after he only returned from trials in Ukraine.
In the second half, Rangers continued to dictate the pace only for the visitors to pull a goal back through youngster
Talabi Olumakinde in the 80th minute.
Substitute Sunday Chinedu restored Rangers two-goal lead in the 88th minute, before Olumakinde completed his brace a minute from time.
