Brazil 2014 jumbo bonus: Why we agreed to pay Eagles –NFF

By From ROMANUS UGWU, Abuja on · Sports

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), says she would continue to cough out the jumbo bonus of $10,000 for the Super Eagles at the Brazil 2014 mundial in a bid to motivate the team to do well.

The soccer federation’s media committee boss High Chief Emeka Inyama told Daily Sunsports yesterday in Abuja that though it wont be easy paying that much, the NFF has resolved to give the players whatever they want, if that is what it will take to get result.

He pointed out that the situation is not that of the NFF bowing to pressure, but that of going for result. It would be noted that the NFF had initially planned to pay the players $5000 each for a win at the group stage of the World Cup, a proposal which the players rejected.

Inyama confirmed yesterday that the bonus issue has been resolved in favor of what the players are asking for.

In the words of the seasoned football administrator: “I want to say that since we are going to participate in the World Cup, with one objective in mind-to do well, we just have to do whatever we can to make the players happy. We want to take a bunch of players that are in high spirits to Brazil. So, you can see what has informed our decision. It is not a case of anybody arm twisting the federation.”

The federation’s chief scribe Barrister Musa Amadu who also spoke on the World Cup bonus stated: “The truth is that we need to encourage our boys at the World Cup because it is the most important tournament in our calendar. By our calculation, we are not just going there to make up the number. We have continuously made it clear that our target is to surpass what we have done before at the World Cup in Brazil.”

Barrister Amadu equally spoke on the shortfall in the World Cup budget, assuring that it wont be a problem.

“As regards the shortfall in the budget, don’t forget that the whole estimate is based on the possibility of the team reaching the final. So, the shortfall can only reflect if we get that far. And if God willing we do, we would beckon on our sponsors to bail us out. And you will agree with me that our sponsors would be willing to support a team that is playing in the final of the World Cup.”
